Gifting Handmade 2024 - Week 1 Recap

We started out DAY 1 of Gifting Handmade with a giveaway from our sponsors at Seams Sew Me, Grace & Piece Co., and myself, Sharon Holland. See last week’s blog post and winner of the drawing, HERE.

Sharon Holland

DAY 2 is the day that the projects began and I lead us off with my new Little Quilter Lacing Blocks pattern. This free pattern on my Freebies page is designed with kids in mind. I used fabrics from my Art Gallery Fabrics Tumbleweed collection along with adding eyelets using the Prym VARIO Creative Tool, stiff interfacing, and long shoelaces to make sturdy lacing blocks.

The Prym VARIO Creative Tool (Handicraft affiliate link) effortlessly adds eyelets, rivets, and snaps to your projects with the different accessory attachments for the tool. It punches holes and presses hardware much like a stapler-action and makes easy work and a no-fail application of adding hardware to a project—I really love this tool! See it in action on my Instagram Reel.

My 8 year old granddaughter was my model for showing the Little Quilter Lacing Blocks in action and declared them to be “A lot of fun!” She started out just lacing around each card then decided to make a quilt by lacing the 4 blocks together—brilliant! I loved seeing how she played with them.

I found these lovely 47” Round Waxed Dress Shoelaces on Amazon (affiliate link) to be the perfect length, price point, and color options.

See the pattern listing material list for the interfacing types I used to make these sturdy, stiff blocks. I added simple quilting and bound the blocks to keep the look of a real quilt. You could also skip the eyelets and just use these as trivets by adding a thermal batting instead of the stiff interfacing

Amanda Bagin

On DAY 3 of Gifting Handmade, Amanda Bagin of @quiltsbycritter on Instagram and designer of the Scenic Road sunflower Quilt Pattern on her Etsy shop, made a quilted tote with my Quilted Carryall pattern.

Amanda use prints from my Art Gallery Fabrics Juniper collection to make this tote perfect for everyday use!

The Quilted Carryall is the perfect size tote for so many uses. I use these totes instead of stockings for the grandkids and each child has a tote that also replaces paper gift bags. I wrap small presents to stay together inside the bag and also use drawstring bags as wrapping, making the material wrap reusable.

I’ve also given this tote to a new mom with a baby quilt inside and it makes a great diaper/go bag for toys and necessities.

The inner zipper pocket and snap closure are both easy details to add for an extra nice finish. As bag making goes, this is one of the easiest patterns you’ll find even though it look complicated there’s very little construction or pieces needed to make this tote. I do still plan to get around to making a video to accompany this pattern and will send out a newsletter once that’s available. I’ve two new grandchildren this year that need totes for under the Christmas tree and a good opportunity to make that instructional video.

Mary Gove

For DAY 4 of Gifting Handmade, Mary Gove of @thecurlyquilter shows off her bag making skills with this trio of Holland Pouches by Center Street Quilts.

Mary selected these festive red prints for her pouches from my Art Gallery Fabrics Tumbleweed collection. I love how each one’s different yet coordinate.

If you’re shy about trying bag making, projects like these smaller pouches are a great way to dip your toes into bag making, adding zippers, and working with quilted material in a 3D project. Plus, zip pouches like these are so useful and a welcomed gift for anyone on your list!

Pouches as gifts also serve double-duty as the wrapping paper for little gifts inside! Just imagine what goodies could be stashed in these for cosmetics, sewing notions, kids toys, art supplies, and on and on.

Joyce Ulm

On DAY 5 of Gifting Handmade, Joyce Ulm brought us the Yarrow wristlet, a Noodlehead pattern and coordinating Key Fob Wristlet is a free sewing tutorial by Stacey Lee Creative. Joyce is the owner of Eva Maes Custom Quilts and sells handmade items as well as long arms quilts You can also find Joyce on Instagram, HERE.

For the wristlet, Joyce used prints from my Art Gallery Fabrics Heirloom collection and the Chasing Daisy print from my AGF Shine On collection for the key fob.

This zippered wristlet is a great size to add inside a bigger bag or to carry all on its own for just the bare necessities. Lovely details with the leather strap and antique-finish hardware.

How cute is this Yarrow Wristlet as a travel sewing kit!?!?!?

Lindsey Fuessley

On DAY 6 of Gifting Handmade, Lindsey Fuessley of Lindsey Makes on Instagram shows us how to add country charm to a dishtowel! Grab your supplies and fabric scraps and learn how with Lindsey’s tutorial on her Lindsey Makes blog post.

Lindsey used prints from my Art Gallery Fabrics Juniper collection for a cozy fall into winter look.

This would be a great project for using up scraps or even orphan blocks—there’s no limit to what could be created!

Projects like these tea towels make excellent hostess gifts during the year and you may want to make several up just to have on hand for any occasion.

GIFTING HANDMADE 2024 WEEK 1 GIVEAWAY

A gift-giving event like this would not be complete without some fabulous giveaway prizes and this week’s giveaway will be a must-have tool for all your sewing projects!

I first learned about the Prym VARIO Creative Tool in the spring when I was asked to collaborate with Prym in promoting the VARIO Creative Tool at the H&H Americas show in Chicago. I made a couple project for them, using the eyelet and rivet hardware and attachments and fell in love with how easy this tool makes it to effortlessly add hardware to a project. I loved it so much that I wanted to create another project using the new, smaller size of eyelets. See the Little Quilters Lacing Blocks entry in the above text.

I’d love for you to experience this must-have tool and am thrilled to have Prym as a sponsor for this event. The winner of this week’s prize will win the VARIO Creative Tool with punch attachments, a box of the 5mm silver eyelet set I used in my project, and the eyelet accessory pack for attaching the eyelets.

Visit my Handicraft affiliate link to learn more about this tool—they have a 20% off deal happening now!
