Sewcial Bee Sampler Block #18

Sewcial Bee Sampler Block #18

Hello SBS Makers, we're buzzing right along with our blocks and this is week 18! We still have a few new Makers joining our sew along and Maureen and I couldn't be more proud of all the gorgeous blocks and the remarkable community that's being built from this sew along. Anyone just joining us may want to take advantage of the in-blog tutorials for the different patchwork techniques used throughout the Sewcial Bee Sampler. Pick up tips and block variations beginning with the first blog post The Start of Something Sewcial.

Let's get started sewing week #18 block! Download the free Square Peg PDF from my Sew Along page.

Square Peg is made from 2 Flying Geese units, 4 half-square triangle (HST) units, and 5 squares. Because we need only 2 Flying Geese units we'll use a different technique for creating Flying Geese. The HST units are made from the 2-at-a-time method we've learned early and for a refresher on this HST technique, refer back to block #2. You may even have some left-over Flying Geese units and HST units from past blocks and could totally skip right to block assembly if they measure 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles and 2-1/2" square HSTs!

Traditional Flying Geese Units

1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of a 2-1/2" fabric A square. Noting orientation, place the marked square right sides together on a corner of a 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangle. Sew just outside the line on the corner side to keep the unit square. Press to set the seam and flatten the material.

2. Trim 1/4" past the stitch line. Press corner open. Noting orientation, repeat on the other corner. Press to set seam and flatten.

3. Trim 1/4" past the stitch line. Press corner open. Note: It's very important to sew one flippy corner at a time. Trim and press open before adding the second flippy corner. Make a total of 2 different Flying Geese units. Units should measure 2-1/2" x 4-1/2"

For my Square Peg block I used fabrics from my Bountiful fabrics for Art Gallery Fabrics along with the AGF Pure Elements solid PE-454 Mediterraneo. Find shops that carry my Bountiful fabrics listed on my Shop Fabrics page.
