Week 2
Welcome back to the second week of the Sweet Home Quilt Along! So, how’d you do on your first week’s assignment of gathering your materials and cutting out all those pieces? Maybe some of you bought kits from the shops listed in our Kit Directory page, shopped local (or really local from your stash)? If you’re still looking for kits for your first, second, third quilt or beyond, there’s still a few left at the participating shops! The pattern can be purchased in my SHOP.
Between my co-host Maureen Cracknell and myself, we’re making three Sweet Home quilts this year. I’m making the Holiday Mix and Bookish versions and Maureen’s making the Cozy & Magical version. All the fabrics (prints and solids) are from Art Gallery Fabrics and each are going to be beautiful!
I’ll be showing off my two quilts here on my blog with a few looks at my past three Sweet Home makes thrown in as well. To see Maureen’s Cozy & Magical version, you’ll want to take a look at Maureen’s blog posts about the QAL.
This week in the QAL we’re ready to take all that hard work you did agonizing over fabric selections or which kit to purchase and the cutting out of all those pieces to start making Log Cabin blocks—yay!
These Log Cabin blocks are fun to make and a great beginner block as there’s no seams to worry about matching up. I’ve prepared two video tutorials this week for helping you piece the ten Log Cabin blocks. Check out the Sweet Home QAL Tutorials page and sew along as I piece a Log Cabin block from start to finish. I’ve broken the Log Cabin into two parts: The Base and the Roof.
Once you’ve made one full block, base to roof, it’s time to up your sewing game and learn how to chain piece the remaining Log Cabin blocks. Chain piecing saves you time and thread and you’ll have these blocks pieced in no time flat.
Be sure to photograph all those beautiful Log Cabin blocks and share with the over 1K other quilt along members on your favorite social media platform. If you’re on Instagram, we’d love to see your Sweet Home Log Cabin blocks. Tag us @maureencracknell and @sharonhollanddesigns and use the #sweethomeqal2021 hashtag.
