Week 1 - Fabric Cutting

Strip cutting tips for beginners. Tips for cutting perfectly sized and straight strips for submitting pieces for your quilt.

Week 2 - Log Cabin Blocks

Sew along with this video and make a Sweet Home Log Cabin block from start to finish. If you’re working with directional fabrics for the Flippy Corner roof background, check out the Controlling Directional Prints in Patchwork Units tutorial on the Main blog of the Sharon Holland Designs website. Note: At the end of this video I state an incorrect size for your pieced block. The correct, unfinished block size (the size before it’s sew into a quilt top) is 9-1/2’’ x 14’’ —sorry for any confusion.

Week 2 - Chain Piecing

Once you feel confident making a block from start to finish then it’s time to chain piece the remaining (same) units or blocks. Save time and thread and make your sewing as efficient as possible by assembly-lining repetitive steps.

WEEK - 3 Bungalow Blocks

Sew along with the video and make a Bungalow block from start to finish. Use the piecing tips in this video to audition and control any directional prints used for the Bungalow roof.

Week - 4 Corner Stone Squares and Sashing

Sew along and create the final units for the Sweet Home quilt. Stitch the Corner Stone squares in the same manner as we’ve already used in making sections of the house blocks and then put the top together with sashing. Learn tips for getting all the rows to line up and keeping those points sharp.

Week - 5 Selecting the Right Batting for Your Project

Join Sharon as she interviews Stephanie Hackney, Director of Sales and Marketing at Hobbs Craft and Retail Division in an informative Q&A about the different types of batting Hobbs Bonded Fibers offers. Learn about the properties of batting fibers, which battings are best for different end uses, and how to get the most from your quilt through the materials you choose to put into it. Take the mystery out of what goes inside your quilt!

For additional help with selecting batting and more Hobbs Batting resources that were talked about in the video, check out this exclusive Sweet Home QAL landing page at Hobbs Bonded Fibers.

Week - 6 Creating Texture and Design with Chenille-It Blooming Bias Binding

Nannette Holmberg, owner and creator of Chenille-It Blooming Bias has prepared a special video for us, showing the multitude of inspiring ways to use Chenille-It binding. The product comes in two widths—3/8’’-wide and 5/8’’ wide and can be used in a single or double layer for various fluffiness or design elements. It’s not just for binding!

Week - 6 Adding a Faux Chenille Binding

This tutorial was filmed durning the 2020 Sweet Home QAL and covered how to add Chenille-It Blooming Bias to a quilt in place of traditional binding. It’s a great tutorial resource if you’re looking to add a soft edge to any quilt.

Week - 6 Traditional Double-Folding Binding

Finishing the edge of your quilt is pretty much the last step before enjoying your hard work or gifting it to someone special. Whether you are adding regular strip binding or bias-cut binding, the finishing seam can give new quilters nightmares. I’ve found this method of ending to be easy and an unnoticeable finishing off of the binding on the quilt. For additional information on how to make binding and attach it to your quilt, read my Binding tutorial.
